The
Institute of
Education
and Research is among few teaching departments which were
established in the very inception of the University.
Initially it was formed as the ‘Department of Education’ in
1974, however after a couple of years, in 1976; it was given the
status of
Institute of
Education
and Research.
To start with, the
Institute of
Education
and Research introduced MEd in the academic session 1975-76
followed by BEd program which was started in the academic
session 1976-77. Later on MPhil and PhD in Education was
initiated in 2000 and BEd (honors) Elementary, a four year
Degree in education program was started in the session 2011-15.

Vision Statement
Through the relevant subject
matter, learner centered teaching techniques and communication
skills; the programmes offered in the Institute envisage
preparing such teaching community that can use these skills
within the classroom setups and promote appropriate teaching and
guidance in order to prepare more capable youth to adequately
shoulder future responsibilities of the nation and country and
perform their duties with true zeal and zest.
Mission
Statement
The programmes offered in the
Institute of Education and Research aim at the production of
teachers equipped with new ideas and innovative teaching
strategies in order to inculcate the need based knowledge and
make the prospective teachers apply new technologies and
techniques in educating their students. The contents of the
programmes are aligned with national requirements to produce
such teachers who are well aware of present trends and teaching
methodologies. The Institute tries to develop attitudes,
abilities and skills essential to successful teaching and
creative educational leadership in the prospective teachers.
Values Statement
A very healthy and academic
environment prevails in the Institute that promotes veritable
sense of responsibility, dutifulness, professional honesty and
respect of others among the faculty. The Institute believes in
the provision of such environment that facilitating and proves
to be conducive for an accommodative teaching –learning process.
Institute of Education and Research and its faculty believes in
the professional ethics and tries its level best to inculcate
such traits in the prospective teachers to make them sound
personnel abiding by the code of conduct and code of teachers
ethics.
Following are the programmatic
objectives of the IER:

understandings, attitudes, abilities and skills essential to

for professional educators for improving their knowledge and
ability
through special in-service education programs.

Provide in-service
training to working teachers and make them able to cope with
changing
concepts and emerging challenges
Ø
Conduct research in
the field of Education and publish the results of such research
for the
information of those who are concerned with education.

Provide guidance and
advisory services to educational institutions as and when
necessary
Seminar library
The Institute of Education and
Research has a very valuable seminar Library consisting of forty
Almirahs containing around 15000 books. Unfortunately due to
financial hardships, no any International Research Journal is
purchased by the IER Library however intending students are
provided with internet access to connect with HEC main Library.
In addition to
Gomal
University’s
Journal of Research, a very Few national Research Journals
(occasionally donated by Public sector Institutions) are made
available to interested faculty and students. Further, Gomal
University students Magazine ‘Danish’ is provided when it is
published by the concerned quarters, whereas a daily newspaper
‘Roznama Mashriq’ is purchased for the
staff and the students.

Research is mandatory at BEd
(honors) Elementary, MEd and MPhil /PhD level and every student
has to pursue a research study under the supervision and
guidance of a faculty member assigned to him/her by the research
Committee of IER.
In addition to MEd regular
students enrolled in IER, the Institute facilitates research
supervision to the students doing MEd through Distance Education
programme.
Research being a compulsory
requirement is also supervised by the qualified faculty of IER
at MPhil and PhD level. A research committee, comprising of the
senior faculty of IER approves appropriate research problems for
the students of MEd, whereas for MPhil and PhD scholars the
approval is accorded by the Advanced Studies and Research Board
of the University, following initial scrutiny and recommendation
by the Institute’s Research Committee.
In addition to supervision of
master’s thesis and MPhil & PhD dissertations, the faculty of
IER has published number of research papers exclusively and
jointly, in the local, national and International journals of
repute. The Institute has arranged numerous workshops under the
auspices of Learning Innovation Division of the Higher Education
Commission
Pakistan to
promote and enhance capacity of pursuing research studies
accordingly. Teaching faculty of the Institute has also
participated in many workshops and seminars held in different
parts of the country. Though the Institute does not publish any
Research Journal its own, but contributes in the Journals being
published around including
Gomal
University
Journal of Research. The Institute also plans to publish its own
Journal of Research as and when possible.
As mentioned earlier, research is
mandatory at master’s level and higher studies of IER. So far
numerous theses have been completed by the students of the IER.
Generally students at the Institute face following challenges
including:

Deficiency in writing
and communication skills
·
Restrictions and
hardships in accessing to primary/secondary research data due to
insecurity and law and order situation in the area
·
Inadequate financial
status of students and institutes inability in providing
financial assistance or research grants
·
Non-availability of
printed research journals
·
Limited access to
internet due to non-availability of appropriate number of
computers, frequent electricity failure/load shedding and access
to e-resources is difficult
·
Lack of latest books
and material on research methodologies
Research being a very pertinent
area of work at the University level is very prominent and
strong feature of the faculty. A very conducive and
encouraging research climate prevails in IER.

College and University Teachers
In addition to the above the
Institute manages the process of admissions to various
programmes including BEd (Honors) Elementary, BEd & MEd
(regular), MPhil and PhD, nonetheless, the Academic section of
the University facilitates in arranging and conducting entry
test i.e. ETEA or NTS etc. which are a necessary requirement for
admission to all the programmes offered in the area of
education.
Within its very limited resources,
the institute provides internet facilities to the faculty,
prospective teachers and research scholars for the purpose of
doing research and exploring latest material relating to the
academics. The institute is connected with HEC’s digital library
through internet but the number of computers available for the
faculty and the students is very limited.
