BACKGROUND Water is a precious resource supporting the life on earth. Although 7/10th part of the world is covered by Water, but only small portion is fit for drinking. The drinking water obtained from rivers, ponds, groundwater, streams etc. are subjected to different types of contamination. According to a report as many as 54 million Pakistanis out of a population of 165 million do not have access to safe drinking water. On one hand there is scarcity of water, while on the other hand the water available is prone to various contaminants as biological, chemical and Physical. There is a dire need to purify and filter the available water in order to protect ourselves from the water born diseases and disorders.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP Following are the aims and objectives of the training workshop.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE 1. Graduate and Post graduate students and staff of the Department of Soil & Environmental Sciences/Faculty of Agriculture/Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan. 2. Participants from NGOs working in the public health and rural development sector. 3. Representatives from District Government and public health sector. 4. Participants from the village communities/Community Board Organizations.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION The participatory workshop includes theory, classroom exercises, demonstrations, open discussion, case studies, guest speakers and hands-on construction. One third time of the workshop is spent on building and installing a BioSand Water Filter. Active participant engagement in learning activities will be encouraged.
