BACKGROUND

Water is a precious resource supporting the life on earth. Although 7/10th part of the world is covered by Water, but only small portion is fit for drinking. The drinking water obtained from rivers, ponds, groundwater, streams etc. are subjected to different types of contamination. According to a report as many as 54 million Pakistanis out of a population of 165 million do not have access to safe drinking water. On one hand there is scarcity of water, while on the other hand the water available is prone to various contaminants as biological, chemical and Physical. There is a dire need to purify and filter the available water in order to protect ourselves from the water born diseases and disorders.

 

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

Following are the aims and objectives of the training workshop.

  • To describe the relationship between water and health.
  • To explain the need for household water treatment, hygiene and sanitation education.
  • Introduction of low cost water filter, using the locally available material.
  • Demonstration how to construct and install a BioSand Water Filter correctly.
  • To describe the operation and maintenance of a BioSand Water Filter.
  • Preparation, installation, use and maintenance of the BioSand Water Filter.
  • To establish a network of contacts of other people interested in this program implementation.
  • Provision of safe drinking water to the rural community.

The following is a tentative list of the topics to be covered in the workshop.

  • Background and present situation of drinking water quality in the region
  • Global water issues
  •  Microbiology and epidemiology
  • Disease transmission
  • Household water treatment options
  •  Safe water storage
  • Sanitation and hygiene
  • BioSand Water Filter design and operation
  •  

PRACTICAL

  • Construction, installation, operation and maintenance of the BioSand Water Filter
  • Selection and preparation of sand media
  • Troubleshooting

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION 

The participatory workshop includes theory, classroom exercises, demonstrations, open discussion, case studies, guest speakers and hands-on construction. One third time of the workshop is spent on building and installing a BioSand Water Filter. Active participant engagement in learning activities will be encouraged.
