                                        "CO2: KICK THE HABIT! TOWARDS A LOW CARBON CONOMY"

INTRODUCTION

A walk and a Seminar was arranged to observe the World Environment Day under the theme "CO2: Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy" on June 5, 2008, in the Faculty of Agriculture, Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan, NWFP., Pakistan. A large number of students and staff members from all departments of the Faculty of Agriculture and other departments of the Gomal University took part in the walk and participated in the Seminar.

The Walk started from the Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture on 9:30 am. On Zero Point Prof. Dr. M. Farid Khan, the Chief Guest, Vice Chancellor, Gomal University, all Deans and other Faculty members joined the walk. Banners and play cards were displayed showing the main theme and other slogans highlighting the change in habit towards a low Carbon economy. The walk ended near the administration block, where the Chief Guest, Vice Chancellor, Gomal University, addressed the participants. He stressed on the neat and clean environment with low CO2. He also highlighted the importance of clean environment and its impact on the human health. “A healthy body has a healthy mind, which is only possible by having healthy habits and neat and clean environment free of pollution and lesser green house gases”, said the Vice Chancellor.

Prof. Dr. M. Qasim Khan, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, thanked the Guests, invited speakers, Faculty members, students and organizers of the event. After the walk a Seminar was held in the A. Q. Khan Auditorium, Gomal University, DIKhan, where speeches were delivered with special reference to the theme of the World Environment Day. Addressing the Seminar, Dr. Muhammad Jamil Khan, Assistant Professor in Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Gomal University, elaborated about the history of the world environment day and explained the theme “CO2: KICK THE HABIT! TOWARDS A LOW CARBON CONOMY" in detail. He also stressed about the change in attitude towards our environment and the habits in our daily life. He not only requested to burn lesser fossil fuels but also appealed to conveuy the message to our neigbours and common people. Dr. M Azam Khan, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Agriculture, Gomal University, also spoke on the occasion and insisted on the efficient use of energy resources in more environment friendly manner. The Guest Speaker Mr. Shahjahan Bhatti, Chairperson, Southern Districts Water Partnership, also elaborated the need of clean environment with low CO2 emissions and other toxic gases which cause the green house effect. He also invited students to use internet extensively for research and education purposes.

The program ended with special thanks to the participants, speakers and the organizers
